Age Groups

0–3 Years | Early Years

At Smart Little Kids, we know babies and toddlers thrive in a secure, caring, and supportive
environment. Our nurturing educators provide individual attention, building strong
relationships that promote trust and confidence. Through sensory play, music, stories, and
exploration, we support children’s early communication, movement, and social skills while
respecting their home routines and family values.

Guiding Your Child’s Development

For infants aged 0–18 months, our focus is on building trusting, secure relationships with
educators who respond to each child’s cues with sensitivity and care. This approach fosters
a strong sense of security, belonging, and wellbeing.

For toddlers aged 18 months–3 years, our program harnesses their natural curiosity and
growing independence. At this stage, children are eager to explore, experiment, and assert
themselves. Our educators provide play-based learning opportunities that support their
individuality, allowing them to develop social, emotional, and physical skills at their own
pace.

Some of the strategies we use to nurture children include:

  • Responsive, caring interactions
  • Consistent and predictable routines
  • Positive reinforcement and encouragement
  • Sensory and exploratory play
  • Emotional support and guidance
  • Opportunities to practise independence
  • Rich language and communication experiences
  • Encouraging peer and group interaction
  • Careful observation to adapt learning to each child’s needs

Building Strong Relationships

We see the Early Years program as a child’s first steps into the world of learning. Our
educators prioritise genuine relationships with children and families, creating an environment
where every child feels valued, safe, and confident. With this sense of security, children are
free to explore, discover, and take on new challenges.

Our educators draw on their knowledge of each child’s unique personality and learning style
to guide them through engaging experiences — from sensory and imaginative play to music,
art, and movement. These experiences spark curiosity and creativity, while also fostering
resilience and confidence.

Communication and Early Literacy

As children’s communication skills develop rapidly during this age, we place a strong
emphasis on early language and literacy development. Through songs, rhymes,
storytelling, and rich conversations, children expand their vocabulary and learn to express
themselves. They also begin to engage in meaningful interactions with peers, laying the
groundwork for collaboration and friendship in later years.

Learning Through Everyday Routines

At Smart Little Kids, we understand that every routine is a learning opportunity. Whether
it’s mealtime, nappy changing, cuddles, or rest, each moment offers chances for children to
communicate, develop motor skills, and build trusting relationships. Our educators use these
daily experiences intentionally to support growth and create consistency, helping children
feel secure and ready to learn.

Just as a strong foundation is essential when building a house, the early years of life provide
the groundwork for all future learning and development. By providing loving care, stimulating
play, and consistent routines, we set the stage for a lifetime of curiosity, confidence, and
success.

3–4 Years | Pre-Kinder

The Pre-Kinder years are filled with curiosity and discovery. Our program encourages
independence, creativity, and problem-solving through play-based learning experiences.
Children are supported to build friendships, develop resilience, and express their ideas with
confidence. Guided by qualified educators, learning is tailored to each child’s interests and
abilities, fostering a lifelong love of learning.

At Smart Little Kids, our Pre-Kinder program provides a rich and stimulating environment
for children aged 3–4 years, designed to nurture their growing independence, curiosity, and
confidence. These years are a time of rapid development as children build stronger social
skills, refine their communication, and expand their imagination. Our program aligns with the
Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF v2.0) and the National Quality Standard (NQS),
ensuring children receive the highest quality early education while still experiencing the joy
of play.

Learning Through Discovery

Children in the Pre-Kinder room are encouraged to explore, experiment, and create in ways
that reflect their unique interests and abilities. Our program blends structured learning
opportunities with child-led exploration, giving children the freedom to make choices
while also being guided by intentional teaching. Through group projects, imaginative play,
outdoor learning, and hands-on experiences, children develop communication,
problem-solving, and early literacy and numeracy skills. This balance ensures that learning
feels natural, engaging, and fun.

Individualised Support

Every child at SLK has their own Individual Learning and Development Plan, which is
reviewed in partnership with families to ensure growth across all areas. Educators carefully
observe and document each child’s progress, adapting experiences to meet their evolving
needs. With small group experiences and personalised attention, children are supported to
become confident learners who feel proud of their achievements.

Social, Emotional, and Cognitive Growth

The Pre-Kinder program places strong emphasis on social and emotional development.
Children learn to collaborate, share, take turns, and build friendships through play and group
activities. Educators guide children in expressing their emotions, developing resilience, and
solving problems with empathy and confidence. Alongside this, cognitive development is
extended through inquiry-based projects, storytelling, music, art, and science experiments
that spark curiosity and creativity.

Belonging, Being, and Becoming

Our Pre-Kinder philosophy is grounded in the principles of Belonging, Being, and
Becoming:

  • Belonging – We create a community where children feel safe, valued, and
connected through strong relationships with educators, peers, and families.
  • Being – We give children time to explore, play, and enjoy the wonder of childhood in
    the present moment.
  • Becoming – We guide children’s growth in ways that help shape their identity,
    independence, and future learning success.

Preparing for School and Beyond

As children approach their preschool years, we ensure they are developing the skills needed
for a confident transition to school. Literacy, numeracy, self-help, and social skills are
embedded into everyday experiences, making learning meaningful and enjoyable. By the
end of Pre-Kinder, children are resilient, curious, and ready to embrace the next stage of
their learning journey with confidence.

4–6 Years | Kindergarten / Preschool

Our Kindergarten/Preschool program prepares children for a smooth and confident transition
to school. Led by university-qualified Early Childhood Teachers, the program combines
play-based learning with intentional teaching to develop literacy, numeracy, and critical
thinking skills. Equally important, we focus on building resilience, independence, and
social-emotional wellbeing, ensuring every child is ready for the challenges and opportunities
of primary school.

At Smart Little Kids, our Kindergarten/Preschool program is carefully designed to
help children aged 4–6 years build confidence, resilience, and essential skills for a
successful transition to primary school. This is a time of remarkable growth where
children are developing their sense of identity, strengthening social connections, and
expanding their understanding of the world. Our program provides a balance of
structured, intentional teaching and child-led exploration, ensuring that learning is
meaningful, engaging, and enjoyable.

Our Approach to Learning

The program is aligned with the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF v2.0) and
the National Quality Standards (NQS), while also drawing inspiration from
educational philosophies such as Reggio Emilia, Montessori, and the Curiosity
Approach. These approaches encourage children to take an active role in their
learning journey by exploring, questioning, and collaborating with others. We
integrate key elements of the early primary school curriculum to ensure children
develop the foundational literacy, numeracy, and inquiry skills needed for a smooth
transition into school.

From 9 am to 3 pm, children engage in focused school-readiness experiences that
reflect the structure of a primary school day. Extended hours are also available,
giving children ample opportunities for social interaction, outdoor play, and creative
exploration — supporting their holistic development.

Social, Emotional, and Cognitive Growth

Kindergarten at SLK is about more than academics — it is about preparing the whole
child. Children engage in collaborative projects, role play, creative arts, and group
discussions that foster communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
Educators guide children in developing emotional regulation, resilience, empathy,
and independence, ensuring they feel confident to navigate friendships and new
challenges.

Cognitive development is extended through inquiry-based learning — science
experiments, storytelling, maths games, and open-ended problem-solving tasks. This
approach promotes curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity, laying a strong
foundation for lifelong learning.

Belonging, Being, and Becoming

Our Kindergarten/Preschool philosophy is grounded in the principles of Belonging,
Being, and Becoming:

  • Belonging – Children feel connected to their community, culture, and
environment, building identity and confidence through meaningful
    relationships.
  • Being – We give children time to enjoy the present moment, to play,
    experiment, and express themselves authentically.
  • Becoming – We support each child’s journey of growth as they develop the
skills, knowledge, and self-awareness that will shape their future success.

Preparing for the Future

As children approach the transition to primary school, our educators work in
partnership with families to ensure readiness across all areas of development.
Whether it is learning to write their name, manage belongings, work in a group, or
ask thoughtful questions, children leave Smart Little Kids ready to embrace the next
stage of their education with confidence and enthusiasm. Our program not only
equips children with academic skills but also empowers them to become curious,
compassionate, and capable learners for life.
